Chapter 86 — "Money": salary, tax, loans, expenses
Money questions are the ones employees ask first and most anxiously: was I paid, why is the net lower this month, where is my tax certificate for the bank, how much of my loan is left. The Money group answers them from the same records payroll uses, so most never reach HR. This chapter is that group as the employee sees it.
What this chapter covers
- 86.1 My Salary and acknowledging payslips
- 86.2 Tax certificates
- 86.3 Loans
- 86.4 Expenses and Team Expenses (managers)
The concept
Pay transparency at the individual level means every employee can see each payslip line, how the month's attendance shaped it, and what the employer paid on top; confirm they received it; and keep official copies. The same goes for deductions they agreed to (a loan) and money they are owed (an expense claim): the balance and the status should be theirs to see without asking.
How Operentra handles it
- My Salary lists the months with a slip, each with its earnings, deductions, net, employer contributions and attendance, and the acknowledgment of receipt that unlocks the signed PDF (Chapter 59).
- Tax Certificates has one certificate per fiscal year, where the country levies income tax through payroll (Chapter 63).
- My Loans shows each loan with its schedule, and Apply for Loan where the person may (Chapter 60).
- My Expenses and, for managers, Team Expenses carry expense claims (Chapter 66).
- Who: every employee, for their own money; Team Expenses for roles that approve team claims.
Walkthrough
Imani Castellanos's portal (NWL-0007), paid monthly by Northwind.
86.1 My Salary and acknowledging payslips
My Salary, "View your salary slips, confirm receipt, and download signed PDFs", lists the Salary Months; choosing one shows the slip: Earnings and Deductions line by line, Loan Repayment where there is one, Total Earnings, Total Deductions and Net Salary, then Employer Contributions "(paid by company, not part of your cash)" and the Total Employer Cost, and the month's Working Days, Present Days, Absent Days and Payment Method. Half Days, Unpaid Leave Days, Late Arrivals and Early Leaves join them in a month that has any, so a docked day shows what docked it: Imani's August slip has Half Days 2 beside the Absence Deduction they cost.
Until HR records the payment, the slip reads Awaiting payment. Once it is paid, "Confirm receipt of your salary" asks the employee to Acknowledge Receipt ("Confirm you've received your … salary?" with the net amount); the acknowledgment is recorded with the date and IP address, and Download Signed Salary Slip (PDF) becomes available. A banner counts the slips still awaiting acknowledgment, and reminders follow by email (Chapter 59).
86.2 Tax certificates
Tax Certificates, "Certificates summarising your salary and income tax deductions for each fiscal year", lists a card per fiscal year in which the person was paid, marked CURRENT for the year in progress, with the months, Gross, Taxable and Tax Deducted, and View and Download. "When can I get my certificate?" explains that a year in progress shows the totals so far. In a country with no income tax on salaries, the item is not in the menu at all.
86.3 Loans
My Loans shows Active Loans and Other Loans, each with the Loan Amount, Installment, Outstanding and Paid Amount, the repayment progress ("8 / 12 installments"), the purpose, any rejection reason, and the Installment Schedule with each due month, amount and payment. Apply for Loan asks for the Loan Type (with its maximum), the Amount, the number of Installments, the Start Month and Start Year, and the Purpose, and shows the estimated monthly instalment; it goes for approval (Chapter 60). Where the workspace does not offer loans to the person, the page says "Loan applications are not available".
A loan HR has paused sits under Other Loans as Paused, its upcoming instalments marked Skipped. Once HR resumes it, it is back under Active Loans, and the instalments for months that passed while it was paused appear at the end of the schedule, so the person can see when the last deduction now falls. No email announces either change.
86.4 Expenses and Team Expenses (managers)
My Expenses lists the person's claims with their status; New Claim writes one with line items and receipts, saved as a draft or submitted to the manager, and an approved claim shows the payroll month that reimburses it (Chapter 66). Managers whose role approves team claims also see Team Expenses: their direct reports' submitted claims, to view, Approve to HR, or Reject with a reason.
What happens next
- Chapter 87 covers the Work group: tasks, reports and performance.
What the employee sees
This chapter is what the employee sees.
Common mistakes
- Asking HR for a payslip copy. It is in My Salary, signed once acknowledged.
- Not acknowledging receipt. The signed PDF waits for it, and the reminders keep coming.
- Reading employer contributions as pay. They are paid by the company on top; they are not in the net.
- Looking for a tax certificate where there is no income tax. There is none to issue.
- Applying for a loan above the type's maximum. The form shows the limit.
Practice
Use your own trial workspace, not a customer's.
- As a test employee with a paid slip, read every line and acknowledge receipt; download the signed PDF.
- Download the current year's tax certificate and compare it with the slips.
- Apply for a small loan and follow it to approval.
